Bodegas Ca N’Estella
5th June 2007
Septembers Restaurant, Blackpool
Presented by C&O Wines and Efrem Mallol, owner of Bodegas Ca N’Estella
The estate was established in 1963 and lies around 30km south of Barcelona. All the wines are made from estate-grown fruit, harvested at night.
NV Cava Brut, Rabetllat I Vidal, Penedes, Bodegas Ca
N’Estella
This is a blend of 40% xarel-lo and 60 macabeo. Fairly clean and round with
good fruit. A bit lacking in character, though. Good/Very Good. 85/100
2005 Chardonnay Clot dels Oms, Penedes, Bodegas Ca
N’Estella
This spends 40 days on its lees. 6000 bottles were produced. A minerally nose
with no obvious oak. Crisp, very minerally fruit on the palate. Again it lacks
much character and very much feels like a wine made to a recipe. Interestingly,
it doesn’t improve with food, and indeed is better drunk on its own: food seems
to bring out a not entirely pleasant acidic streak. Good. 84/100
2005 Rosado Clot dels Oms, Penedes, Bodegas Ca N’Estella
10-15,000 bottles are produced of this rosé, which is made from free run juice
from 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. It has a very deep colour. There’s
sweet blackberry and cherry fruit on the nose. The palate is full, with sweet
red fruit. There’s a touch of coarseness on the palate, but it has decent
balance and great length. Very Good. 87/100
2003 Merlot Clot dels Oms, Penedes, Bodegas Ca N’Estella
5600 bottles are produced of this 100% merlot. The nose has hot, sweet black
fruit with strong vegetal notes. Rather thin and weedy on the palate. Lacking
fruit and character. A bit hot, and with poor structure. OK/Good. 80/100
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Clot dels Oms, Penedes, Bodegas
Ca N’Estella
2002 was the second vintage of this wine, of which 5000 bottles were produced.
It has a hot minty nose with some weedy black fruit. Decent palate, but
unexceptional. Good. 84/100
