  Served from a half bottle. It's remarkably white wine like on the nose, which has some orangey perfumed raisins. Not entirely unsurprisingly, it feels very old on the palate. But again, it's more about the age than the grape, and served completely blind, I could see myself wondering if it was a very old riesling. Interesting, to be sure, and really quite pleasurable.

  Gosh, this has such extreme precision on the nose, you feel you could cut yourself on it. Very precise palate too. It's austere, with razor sharp acidity, but all balanced by a decent character. (87 points)

  Good, warm red fruits nose. Lightish palate. There's a certain greenness of fruit that combines with the tannins on the finish to produce a certain bitterness, which isn't to my taste. (85 points)

But it's much more obvious on the palate, where it really felt like I had two wines in my mouth at the same time. A most curious effect! Loads of acidity on the finish reminds you that it's riesling in there somewhere. (86 points)

  A rare wine with an annual production of only about 500 bottles. This has a very interesting nose with a good mature, almost Auslese feel. Ditto on the palate. It's working very well for me, and is in very fine condition. (91 points)

  Partly fermented on its skins, apparently.
  Very fresh and open on the nose. There's a nice open crispness on the palate. Works well. (88 points)

  There's some concentrated pear fruit on the nose. Fresh and really quite zingy on the palate. Lot of zingy acidity. Very fresh. but there's some good fruit behind too. (88 points)

  A very fresh nose considering it's 30 years old, with some hints of smokiness. Very good palate. Absolutely spot on. Perfect balance. Goes on and on and on. (93 points)

  There's quite a basic feel to the nose with some minerals and stone fruit. Good, easy drinking palate with nice length. (86 points)

  There's some nice fruit on the nose here. A very pleasant palate too. This works very well. There's nice balance - a hint of sweetness, but with the acidity very much in control. (89 points) 
• 2008 Friedrich Fendel Rüdesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Erstes Gewächs - Germany, Rheingau (11/2/2010)
  This has a fairly classy feel on the nose initially with a real perfumed muskiness. There's nice weight on the palate, and it has quite a satisfying feel to it. Some serious acidity on the finish. (89 points)

  Fairly powerful nose of unsweet peaches. Very dry palate. It feels a little off balance with quite a bitter note on the finish. (84 points)

  There's quite a grapey-apple juice feel to the palate, which is rather endearing. Good palate. Nice balance. It has quite a light feel to it - much more so than many BAs. Which isn't to its detriment. (90 points)
